When to send
SMS: Same-day thank you
Send within a few hours of completing the job. Short, personal, from the owner.
SMS: Next-day check-in
Follow up the next day. Checks on the work first, then asks for the review. Feels less transactional.
SMS: Quick and casual
The shortest option. Good when you have a lot of customers to text and want to keep it simple.
SMS: Referral + review
Asks for a review and plants the referral seed in the same message. Two birds, one text.
SMS: Review rescue (unhappy customer)
For customers who seem unsatisfied. Redirects them to contact you directly instead of leaving a negative review.
Email template
More formal follow-up. Works great attached to an invoice or completion email.

See how it worksWhy Google reviews matter for contractors
They drive local search rankings
Google uses review count and rating as a major ranking factor in local search. More reviews means more visibility in the map pack.
Customers trust reviews over ads
88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. A strong review profile is your best sales tool.
Higher ratings justify higher prices
Businesses with 4.5+ stars can charge 5-9% more than competitors. Customers expect to pay a premium for highly rated service.
Recent reviews matter most
73% of consumers only consider reviews written in the last month. A steady stream of new reviews outperforms a stale batch of old ones.
Tips for getting more reviews
Ask within 24 hours of completing the job. The experience is still fresh and the customer is most willing to help.
Use a direct link (like the one this tool generates). Every extra click between the ask and the review form loses half your reviewers.
Make it personal. Include the owner's name and reference the specific work. Generic requests get ignored.
Respond to every review you receive, positive or negative. It shows future customers you care and encourages more reviews.
Print the QR code on leave-behind cards, invoices, and your van. Physical touchpoints convert surprisingly well.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Google Place ID and how do I find mine? +
A Google Place ID is a unique identifier that Google assigns to every business location. You need it to create a direct review link. To find yours, go to Google's Place ID Finder tool, search for your business name, and copy the ID that appears. It usually starts with "ChIJ" followed by a string of letters and numbers.
How many Google reviews do I need to rank well locally? +
There's no magic number, but most contractors who rank in the top 3 of the local map pack have at least 50 reviews. More importantly, you need a consistent flow of recent reviews. Google weighs recency heavily, so 10 reviews in the last month matter more than 100 reviews from two years ago.
Is it okay to ask customers for reviews? +
Yes. Google explicitly encourages businesses to ask customers for reviews. What you cannot do is offer incentives (discounts, gifts, payments) in exchange for reviews, or ask only happy customers while filtering out unhappy ones through a gating system. A straightforward "we'd appreciate a review" is perfectly fine.
When is the best time to send a review request? +
The best time is within a few hours of completing the job. The customer is still thinking about the experience and is most likely to follow through. If you miss that window, a follow-up the next day still works well. After 48 hours, response rates drop significantly.
Can I automate review requests after every job? +
Yes. Services like Turnkey Dispatch can automatically send a review request text or email after every completed service call. This removes the manual effort entirely and ensures you never forget to ask, which is the number one reason contractors have fewer reviews than they should.
